PEE-KA-BOO Last Round
Pencil, Procreate, 2021
In 2019, I went to Kenya to study wildlife research. I was strikingly shocked when professor informed us that rhinos were critically endangered due to illegal poaching, especially the last two northern white rhinos Nadine and Fatu were left to be mom and daughter which means they didn’t have the ability to breed naturally anymore. Even more heartbreakingly, I was attacked by some opinions when I was trying to call on less rhino horn purchase for medicinal purpose because they value no more than human nails. Thus, I began to doubt on human nature and its unveiled selfishness when it comes to the balance between us and the rest residents on the earth.

Green Puzzle on Wilderness
During my first eye-opening experience of living the life of a farmer in the States, I was impressed by their daily sustainable practice of saving energy for the good of food and our earth. Deeply moved, I admire these farmers and all other voluntary WWOOFers to be ordinary beings and true heroes driving the earth’s green career.
I also realize that these “hero behavior”, compared to the effort needed to save our planet, is still close to nothing, similar to the image of watering in a dessert - taking the initiatives but hard to make progress in the big picture. Nevertheless, they are still the green heroes in the dessert, facing back to the impending dusk to save our planet, doing their little bit to foster more oasis on the land of deteriorating dessert. At the end of the day, these green puzzles will attract more people and piece together the hope for a healthier home.
We are often swayed by a one-sided, tragic narrative thus, subconsciously opt to overlook the dual nature of events, especially when it comes to our “endangered” environment. However, addressing environmental issues in a win-win solution is beyond difficult to achieve, requiring incessant debates and attention. Through a documentary from Summer Program, I learnt this lesson in the case of North Atlantic Right Whales and Lobstermen Protest in Maine.
Vision of a Drop of Water
Acrylic on canvas
45*60cm, 2023
One day I was taking off my double eyelid tape, a thought popped up in my mind, does water droplet have a soul that they were watching me dealing with my appearance anxiety? To explore this idea, I portrayed a vision of water drops from the faucet in my dorm bathroom. We, as human beings, especially when we are doing school and caught up with all busy works, we often ignore the living nature of objects around us. However, animals or plants are not the only living creature in my belief. Does animalism explain that even desk, chair and a tiny drop of water has soul? Thus, I recorded this image in a fish eye effect from my imagination in the perspective of a drop of water. The depth view of this familiar bathroom creates a mysterious combination of daily behavior and surroundings that we ignored in our repetitive contact with them.
Wind Hugging

To further explore my idea about animalism, I did an experiment artwork with the help of our old friend, wind. Not only that I believe wind has their own form of souls, but also I aimed to explore the mutual feelings in their communication with me. I tied some markers on the trees to let the color freely drop on the piece of paper on which I drew a series of my hands in the movement to hug something. Printed on the paper, the wind had an indirect communication with me through colors to deliver its emotions visually.

Ring Finger
“One is not Born, but Rather Becomes, a Woman”
is dedicated to all who had suffered from “double eyelid aesthetics bullying”, who feel deep anxiety while running out of double eyelid tapes and who experience increasing lack of confidence with their eye shape and eager to change
The Second Sex, written by Simone de Beauvoir, spread this quote “One is not born, but rather becomes a woman”.
I thought about the identity of women to be not determined by their biological feature, but by men, social standards and even civilization to achieve the current meaning of "women". Simone de Beauvoir compares men as subjects and women as objects; men as independent entities and women as human beings dependent on men that performs a certain duty. Deeply inspired, I linked my experience of playing the piano during which the ring finger cannot lift on its own, and it always requires the assistance power of the middle or little finger to drive the ring finger, helping it strike the keys. Ring finger, under the unspoken rules, became the “dependent objects” as women.
Coincidentally, the ring finger is a symbol of marriage and love, and the ring is used to express people's stereotype that women are born more sentimental. The puppet fingers entwined with thin threads reflects the insubstantial illusion of men’s social status. Only that the real finger which represents women, although in a weak position, articulates fighting for the rights that men have, but what’s more valuable is the power of women itself.
